Duško Gojković, Dusko Goykovich. This Enja CD is an exception, an excellent quartet/quintet date with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Mickey Roker; tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath is on five of the nine selections. Goykovich, whose hero was Miles Davis (one of his eight originals on this session is called "Ballad for Miles"), has a mellow tone and a likable swinging style. This relaxed CD is an excellent example of his talents.

Duško Gojković (Serbian Cyrillic: Душко Гојковић; born 14 October 1931) is a Serbian jazz trumpeter, composer, and arranger. Gojković was born in Jajce (ex-Yugoslavia, now in Bosnia-Herzegovina). He studied at the Belgrade Music Academy from 1948 to 1953. He played trumpet in dixieland bands and joined the big band of Radio Belgrade when he was eighteen.

The prize-winning Soul Connection is an excellent quartet/quintet date from a trumpeter with a mellow tone Duško Gojković with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Gómez, and drummer Mickey Roker, while the great tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath joins Gojković on the frontline for about half the album. Combining the attack of a hard bopper with the melancholia of cool jazz, Gojković has developed his own unmistakable style. On Soul Connection Gojković’s roots in his native folk music are still obvious. With the exception of “I’ll Close My Eyes,” all tunes are originals that sound a little like Balkan folk melodies successfully transplanted into a jazz setting. He dedicates the music of this release to Miles Davis (one of his eight originals on this session is called “Ballad For Miles”), who Gojković credits with helping him early on in his career. Throughout Gojković is in top form and the concise solos and supportive work by his all-star sidemen really inspires the trumpeter into making solo statements that would have pleased Davis. A few tunes feature the trumpeter in that bright muted style that he has used a fair bit in the years of the later phase of his career, while others have him opening up with a deeper tone. Flanagan’s fine piano work is particularly evident in the bossa nova “Inga” but also throughout the whole album, Gómez has some great bass licks on “Inga” and the standard “I’ll Close My Eyes,” while Griffin (on five of the nine selections—“Soul Connection,” “Inga,” “Blues Time,” “Adriatica” and “Teamwork Song”) blows soulfully on tenor with the same kind of creative introspectivity expected from his own albums. It is worth to mentioned that the long out of print limited edition of all analogue recording was pressed on two 180-gram high quality vinyl LPs in 1994, entitled Soul Connection Vol. I (with first five tracks from CD) and Soul Connection Vol. II (with the additional four tracks). Honoured with the German Jazz Critics Award, Soul Connection arise public attention worldwide and was greeted as Gojković’s overdue comeback though he has never been really away from the scene. In the USA, where he still appears to be relatively unknown and had few of his recordings available, the CD received high praise from the Jazz Times Magazine (‘Pearl of mainstream jazz’) and four stars from the Down Beat Magazine. In Germany Gojković was honoured with a title story in the monthly Jazz Podium and even a 250-page book on his life and music. Never mind whether it will be on CD or two LPs release, this music will appeal to those who appreciate good small group jazz, excellent trumpet, or the sound of good bop reminiscent of Miles Davis in the 1960s. Every real jazz fan should have this album in own collection because this kind of music is really timeless.
