Belcea Quartet - Schubert: Streichquartett, D 804 "Rosamunde"; Quartettsatz, D 703; Streichquartett, D 87 flac mp3
In many ways, this is an admirable recording of three quartets by Schubert. England's Belcea Quartet is a fine young quartet with a cogent ensemble, cohesive tone, and capable technique. And it seems to really mean what it plays: the A minor quartet is passionately sincere, the "Quartetsatz" is furiously earnest, and the early E flat major quartet is fervently committed. EMI's sound is immediate and vivid. It seems likely, however, that the disc will be more for fans of the Belcea Quartet than for lovers of the quartets of Schubert

The Quartettsatz c-Moll, or Quartet Movement in C minor, D 703 was composed by Franz Schubert in December 1820 as the first movement, Allegro assai, of a string quartet he was never to complete. Upon publication it was nonetheless listed as his String Quartet No. 12. (Schubert did also compose the first 40 bars of the next movement, Andante. The nine-minute work is regarded as an early product of the composer’s mature phase of output.

The Artis Quartet have all the right Viennese qualifications to play Schubert – their playing is graceful and stylish, with genuine warmth of tone and expression. In the A minor Quartet they take their cue from Schubert’s many expression marks – making the accents and crescendos sound absolutely spontaneous; pointers to the underlying emotion. The Supraphon recording lacks the depth and realism of the new Sony, and the performances, though lively and sensitive, don’t have the ardour and spontaneity the Artis Quartet bring to theirs. The Rosamunde Variations of the 13th quartet are notably fresh as is the concluding movement of the earlier 10th quartet for example. There is the unmistakable sense of the dance in the pacing and phrasing in much of the playing. That is not to say that the remaining movements are in any way sluggish or turgid! Even the more dramatic, and even tragically dramatic Quartettsatz which is placed second on the disc cannot break the sense of young players playing with a spring in their steps
