The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s

Many of the recordings that appeared on it had languished in obscurity for 20 years, and it proved a revelation to a new group of folkies, from Pete Seeger to John Fahey to Bob Dylan. The cast of artists includes pioneers in several fields, from the Carter Family and Uncle Dave Macon to Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, and the Alabama Sacred Harp Singers.

Each stream I followed over the past 50 years led to discovering new creeks and ponds and swamps. Now I own some Jimmie Rodgers, and a ton of Carter Family, and some Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt, and I've heard the early records of many artists who did not earn lasting fame, except perhaps in Smith's collection. It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half. 16 people found this helpful.

Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images. The Almanacs were really the first folk music supergroup and spun off into rather successful careers for Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Josh White, Burl Ives, and various other folks who made up the core of the group or who joined them on occasion. Seeger and Hays went on to form The Weavers. They've released more than 40 albums in the last 50 years, and have become somewhat of an institution in contemporary folk music.

The traditional music of Japan comprises a rich variety of styles developed over the course of more than a millennium. Among them are ancient imperial court music (Gagaku), the 14th-century form of musical drama patronized by feudal lords (Noh), and semiclassical music. This 1974 recording features three traditional Japanese semiclassical and five regional folk music compositions, also from the late feudal period. The semiclassical performances feature the shamisen (lute), koto (zither), and shakuhachi (flute). Folk songs come from the mountains, the coast, Okinawa, and Tokyo. This album is part of the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music.
